Bank Accounting Boot Camp Part 1

The first webinar will explain general accounting practices, including double-entry accounting, the general ledger, and U.S. GAAP. It will cover financial statements typically prepared by banks and the impact of journal entries on GL accounts. This part will also focus on accounting for cash and amounts due from correspondent banks. Accounting entry examples and exercises will be provided.

The second webinar will focus on accounting for investment securities and the bank’s loan portfolio, including premiums, discounts, unrealized gains/losses, and accruals into the allowance for loan losses. Related income and expenses flowing through the income statement will also be covered. Accounting entry examples and exercises will be provided.

The third webinar will cover non-interest-bearing assets such as premises and equipment, other real estate owned, and prepaid expenses, along with associated income statement expenses. It will also include a discussion on official checks and the debits/credits that keep official check accounts in balance. Accounting entry examples and exercises will be provided.

The fourth webinar will cover interest-bearing liabilities, including deposits, borrowings, and debt, and the associated interest expenses. Topics include capitalization of interest payable on deposit accounts, handling debt issuance costs, and accruing for future expenditures and contingencies. Accounting entry examples and exercises will be provided.

The fifth webinar will focus on the equity section of an institution’s balance sheet, including common equity instruments and rolling forward net income or losses. It will also cover accounting for common transactions between a bank and its holding company. Accounting entry examples and exercises will be provided.

Cynthia Dopjera
Certified Public Accountant
Cynthia Dopjera, a Certified Public Accountant, has 40 years of experience focused on accounting and regulatory reporting for financial institutions. During the first 18 years of her career, Ms. Dopjera held various positions with responsibility across all operational areas, including accounting, internal audit, Call Report preparation and review while working for community as well as regional banks.
In 2000, Ms. Dopjera joined the public accounting firm of Harper & Pearson Company, P.C., where she served as practice leader for the firm's financial institutions practice covering community and regional institutions. The firm's services included financial statement audit, accounting, tax preparation and filing, internal control audit, Call Report audit, loan and asset quality review, and design and implementation of internal controls over financial reporting frameworks for institutions regulated under FDICIA and Sarbanes-Oxley. In 2018, Ms. Dopjera retired from Harper & Pearson Company, and currently provides accounting, consulting, and training services to financial institutions.

The learning experience is designed for those who are new to bank accounting, bank auditing or those who are looking for a refresher on the accounting practices and basics components of the balance sheet and income statement of a financial institution.
Time should be allowed for post-session follow up work on accounting exercises provided as part of the learning experience.
